All-round artist, Francesco Vezzoli assumes at the same time the

role of creator and viewer. Coinciding with Biennale’s opening,

he presents at MAXXI in Rome his project “The Trinity”, that will

continue at MOMA PS1 in New York and at the MOCA in Los Angeles.

Below a piece of the interview made by Mariuccia

Casadio  for the last issue of L’Uomo Vogue

L’U.V.: Tell us about your exhibition cycle The Trinity at MAXXI

in Rome, PS1 in New York and MoCA in Los Angeles?

 F.V.: “The idea came from talking with Klaus Biesenbach, who told

me that “It’s obvious your work moves between mediatic glamour,

religion and art. You orbit these three spheres to investigate the power

of magic, illusion and the commodification of dreams…”. So we decided

that Church, Cinema and Museum would be the subjects of three

installations in different places, with a bio-bibliographic progression.

Which is to say that my first videos were shot in Rome, then I lived in

New York, then pushed on as far as Los Angeles, to then return all the

way home, to Milan – or metaphorically to Brescia, where I was born.

They’re three retrospectives that don’t contain a single new piece.

Everything I’ve produced till now will also be documented in three or

four different books. Then I can leave everthing behind, a bit like

Beyoncé says in the new Pepsi ad: “Embrace your past, but live for now!“.

L’U.V.: In closing, I’m guessing that the portraits you made

for these pages are emblematic of your upcoming shows.

 F.V.: “The choice of the three works and the three artists is very precise.

As for religion, comments are superfluous: the portrait of Pope Innocent X

by Diego Velázquez (on the cover, ed.) is one of the most important paintings

in history. And there’s not much to add regarding its connection to power –

just look at the attitude, the clothing, the sneer on his face. The portrait of

Laurence Olivier by Salvador Dalí, my favorite painter, is for me a fetish

object. When I recently visited the Vatican Museums, Antonio Paolucci

introduced me to the rivalry between Raphael and Michelangelo. On the

one hand, the frivolous, worldly Raphael, lover of fine clothes and beautiful

women. On the other, the already elderly, cantankerous and avaricious

Michelangelo. Needless  to say, I immediately identified with Raphael”.

Maxxi, MoMAPS1 and MOCA are for the first time

collaborating on this new over-ambitious project

by Francesco Vezzoli, aptly titled “TheTrinity”.

Art, Religion and Movies. These are the three key elements which have

always been the main characters in artist Francesco Vezzoli’s work

since the beginning of his career. Three intertwined universes that he wove

in a series of strong allegories with a rich subtext of elaborate  references,

involving video installations, petit-point embroideries, photography and

live performances, mixing  heterogeneous languages and genres.

The first extensive international retrospective show of Francesco Vezzoli,

displaying 15 years of work in three  separate but related exhibitions,each

one examining in depth the fundamental aspects of his body of work. The

futuristic spaces of MAXXI in Rome, designed by Zaha Hadid, will be

transformed into a over-decorated  1800’s style museum. The exhibition,

titled “Galleria Vezzoli” (28 May – 24 November 2013), will focus

especially on Vezzoli’s vocation to artistic quotation, with a specific

section dedicated to the artist’s selfportraits.

In autumn 2013,  the New York’s MoMA PS1 will host The Church Of

Vezzoli, curated by Klaus Biesenbach: on display inside a 19th century

Italian church literally transported and moved from the South of Italy to the

courtyard of the MoMA PS1, will be Vezzoli’s works exploring the theme

of cult and worship.

The programme will come to an end in autumn/winter 2013 with the opening

of  Cinema Vezzoli,  curated by Alma Ruiz, at the Museum of Contemporary

Art, MOCA, in Los Angeles featuring a particular focus on the artist’s

films, his experiments with this medium and his passion for European

cinema and Hollywood stardom in order to represent our society’s

obsession with celebrity. 

Each exhibition will open at short distance one from the other, unveiling

for the very first time the whole complexity of Vezzoli’s world step by step,

continent by continent, until the three shows will be exceptionally

open at the same time.

Riccardo Tisci cast what he calls his gang, a group of people

 that are “very faithful to my style, and faithful as human

beings” in  Givenchy‘s Fall 2013 campaign. The black and

“I think it is a moment of history for me in fashion for my

own gang” Tisci said in a statement, adding that in the

campaign, ”there is a gypsy feeling because it is the inspiration

of the collection. Again, the reality of someone like Carine with

her daughter showing real love or Quim with Amanda is very

special to me. All of them, including the models, are real

gypsies in heir own life.  They travel the world.”

Karl Lagerfeld’ sketch about Trevi Fountain

Italian fashion house Fendi is funding the restoration

of Rome’s crumbling Trevi Fountain, with artistic director

Karl Lagerfeld on hand to present the $3 million project.

The 20-month restoration will clean the fountain, which covers

the entire facade of Rome’s Palazzo Poli with its allegorical statues

of Tritons guiding the shell chariot of the god Oceanus illustrating

the theme of the taming of the waters. The project will remove calcium

deposits, clean the statues, check the strength of steelsupporting them,

apply new waterproofing to the large basin, fix leaks, install new

pumps and electric works and add new barriers to keep pigeons away.

The last restoration was about 25 years ago but officials said new

techniques developed since then would make it the most thorough

cleaning in the fountain’s 251-year history. In exchange, Fendi will

get only a small sign about the size of a coffee table book telling

tourists that it was the sole sponsor. The sign will stay up for four years

after the project is completed. “It seemed right to thank this city, which

since 1925 offered inspiration, creativity, aesthetic fervour and culture,

a home where our brand has prospered and grown from a Roman

fashion house into a global fashion label,” said Pietro Beccari, president

and CEO of Fendi. Lagerfeld said he would make a book of photographs

of Rome fountains called Glory of Water. Fendi will also be sponsoring

the restoration of another four fountains in the city as part of its Fendi

for Fountains initiative.

Scene is the new book by Jeannette Montgmomery Barron.

The book tells the New York art scene of the eighties through

the portraits of his protagonists as Warhol, Keith Haring,

Basquiat that the photographer has snapped in black

and white with his Hasselblad.

“In 1985, the gallery owner came to my studio and bought forty portraits proposed

me to make a catalog” – remember Montgmomery Barron – “I said that was fine,

but I was young and I did not think he was serious. Then in 1989 I decided to contact

them, asking him if he was always willing to do the book. He did it in a limited edition

of one thousand copies which had hardly available: you could only find the Library

Rizzoli. This new book is different, because I saw the samples one by one and have

them scanned. And if any picture is the same, but the project is completely new because

the text is different with my memories of those times that accompanies the images. “

The rodnik band has teamed up with famed comic

strip Peanuts on a playful fashion project. The British

label delved into the artwork archives to design a

capsule collection featuring Snoopy,

Charlie Brown and the rest of the gang.

The womenswear label, helmed by Philip Colbert, is renowned for

its fun and often surreal sensibility – with plenty of bold colourful

pieces covered in pop art prints. The new collaboration with

Peanuts features ready-to-wear dresses and separates alongside

sequin-adorned accessories. “There is a fun synergy between

The Rodnik Band and Peanuts – humour is something that works

through each Rodnik collection and it felt like a natural fit to bring

the Peanuts character into the Rodnik world,” explained Colbert.

“They are true icons of pop art and have survived from the Fifties

through to now.” The Rodnik X Peanuts collection will land in

selected stores in September.

Japanese fashion house Comme des Garçons  is launching a

capsule collection of t-shirts, bags, scarves and sneakers

illustrated with the works of Andy Warhol, including

self-portraits by the Pop artist and his silk screen prints

depicting flowers and cows in bright colors.

After the launch in November 2011 of a capsule collection of t-shirts and

jumpers printed in the designs of artistKeith Haring, Commes des

Garçons has now developed a new art-inspired line, using the work of

Andy Warhol. Including self-portraits and silk screen prints of cows

and flowers, the American artists’ designs are printed on the fifteen-

piece collection comprised of t-shirts, bags, scarves and sneakers.

The creative and colorful line is available now at the Comme des

Garçons boutique at 54 Rue du Faubourg St-Honoré in Paris.

On May 17th Miroslava Duma and Fira Chiliev together

with Polina Deripaska, Chairman of the Board of

Directors of the publishing house “Forward Media 

Group” launched the Ukraine version project Buro 24/7.

Following the Russian and East European version of the project,

just in two months Ukrainian version was able to take a special

place among the media. The aim of the project is to highlight

interesting and significant events in the world, with an

emphasis on Ukrainian news about fashion, movies, art,

music, beauty, social life.  In each country there is a huge

number of talented and creative people, and the main task of

Buro 24/7 is to tell a wide audience about them. The publisher

of the Ukrainian version is Asya Mkhitaryan – the owner of a

series of interior design shops and boutiques, including Valentino

and Agent Provocateur. The founders Miroslava Duma and Fira

Chiliev welcomes a large number of local celebrities and

international guests.  The evening began with a video presentation

of Buro 24/7 Ukraine website , fallowed by the installation of

Ulyana Sergeenko and Vicka Gazinskaya and the performance

of French electronic group Télépopmusik.

It ended the 2013 edition of the Billboard Music Awards

at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, absolute

winners of the night were Taylor Swift, and Rihanna Gotye,

who crushed the competition in the main categories.

The young and talented country singer, nominated in 12 categories,

took home with 8 awards, won thanks to his latest album ‘Red’,while

the Belgian singer has won everything they could win under beds,

4 awards, thanks to the hit ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’. Rihanna

has dominated the category instead r’n'b and also making sure her 4

awards. Madonna, Nicki Minaj and One Direction have secured three

awards each, while the prince of pop Justin Bieber has had to “settle”

for only two categories, including that of the ‘Best Male Artist.

Remain almost dry mouth Maroon 5, which fell among the artists

nominated for this year: they just went the prize ‘Top Hot 100 Artist’.

Cartier have re-created some of Grace Kelly’s most

iconic jewels specially for Grace of Monaco,

the upcoming biopic starring Nicole Kidman.

The actress plays Grace Kelly in the new movie,

which focuses on just six months of the actress-

turned in princess’s life. Grace Kelly, who married

Ranieri III, Prince of Monaco in 1956, was a long-time

lover of the Parisian jewellers. It was a love affair

that was cemented when Ranieri proposed to her with

a 10.47 carat emerald-cut diamond Cartier ring just

three days after they met. It was no surprise, then, that

Cartier was asked to come on board the production of

the Olivier Dahan-directed film which will hit screens in 2014.
