Dior & Guggenheim
international gala

Hosted by honorary chairs Raf Simons and Dior CEO Sidney Toledano

in the Guggenheim’s spiraling Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda,

the Guggenheim International Gala was held in honor of artists

James Turrell, whose blockbuster exhibition of light installations

attracted over 500,000 visitors earlier this year, and Christopher

Wool, whose retrospective is currently on view.

The evening was preceded by a pre-party celebration, hosted by the

museum’s Young Collectors Council. It’s the first time the museum has

partnered with a major fashion house for its annual benefit. “I’ve always been

very inspired by the Guggenheim—the architecture, of course, but also the

way they’ve been curating shows and retrospectives,” said Simons.“It’s kind

of weird that tonight I’m standing in the middle of this body of work

by Christopher Wool, who was one of the artists[coming to the forefront]

right at the moment I was starting to look at art.” Keep in mind, this

was long before he even imagined sewing or draping. “I was always into art,

way before I knew about fashion or any other kind of creative [sphere],” he

continued. “It gives me a lot of relaxation. By surrounding myself with art, I’m

not constantly in my head thinking about my own things.” Yet it’s no surprise

that those two worlds have since collided, with motifs like Pablo Picasso faces

and Andy Warhol watercolors popping up in past collections. It’s a merger that

only makes sense for someone like Simons, who sees art as a lifeline in his

clothes. “[Art] is like water,” he says. “You take it when you need it. You

need it always, but sometimes you need a lot, and sometimes less.”
